Gina Carano Suing Disney & Lucasfilm with Elon Musk Support
Gina Carano, who plays Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, is suing Disney because she was fired from the show. She says she was fired unfairly and because of sexism.
Carano's lawyer filed a complaint in the US District Court Central District of California today. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report on it, and they also released the full lawsuit. Carano says that she was fired because "she dared to voice her own opinions on social media platforms and elsewhere."
The former mixed martial arts fighter also wrote a statement on X/Twitter in which she said that Elon Musk is paying for the lawsuit. She used Musk's previous promise to pay for any legal action for X/Twitter users who were discriminated against at work because of their activity on the social media site.
She says in her statement that her words were "consistently twisted to demonize and dehumanize me as an alt-right extremist." It was an unfair campaign of lies meant to shut me up, hurt me, and make an example of me. She also says that her "male co-stars permitted to speak without harassment & re-education courses or termination, but I was not afforded the same right to exercise my freedom of speech."
As the backlash grew, the lawsuit says Disney made Carano meet with members of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) and told her she had to apologize in public, which she refused to do. In the case, it is said that Disney ran a "post-termination smear campaign" against her.
Aside from being rehired to play Cara Dune "with no loss of pay or benefits," Carano is also suing for two types of compensatory damages: back pay she missed out on because she was fired "to the date of reinstatement" and compensation for future work, including her "promised role in Rangers of the New Republic."
Before she was fired, Carano played Cara Dune on The Mandalorian for two seasons. After Carano was fired from Lucasfilm, it was said that her character was going to be the main character in the aforementioned Star Wars series Rangers of the New Republic. The reveal was supposed to happen at the 2020 Disney Investor Day, but the plans were shelved.
