Madame Web Director Confirms Films World Setting & Time Period
We learned earlier this week that Sony had chosen to remove any references to Madame Web's original 1990s setting because they got in the way of their plans to connect the story to one of the live-action Spider-Men movies.
When the first set photos showed the story taking place in the early 2000s, that didn't make a lot of sense. But no matter how you try to figure it out, neither the 1990s nor the 2000s perfectly match up with any of the live-action versions of Peter Parker and when they first put on Spider-Man's suit (remember that this movie is supposed to have a pregnant Mary Parker).
Entertainment Weekly revealed today that Madame Web does take place in 2003 and that the story will be about "Cassie" (Cassandra Webb) fighting off the bad guy Ezekiel Sims. He wants to kill Julia, Mattie, and Anya, who are also known as Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, and Araña. The site doesn't say why, but the video makes it look like it's because they will kill him in the future.
Despite the rumors about ties to Spider-Man in the MCU or Sony’s World the director stated
Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter, Clarkson was quick to say, "She’s definitely in a standalone world."
