Sony TAKES OVER all of Disney Production of Physical Media
Sony will now be in charge of making Disney's hard media collections.
A website called The Digital Bits says that Disney and Sony have decided that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will make the physical media. This is what Sony will do: "authoring and compression of discs."
This comes after a rough few years for The Walt Disney Company's physical media businesses, which saw their staff cuts in late 2019 and early 2020. Since the launch of Disney+, home streaming has become the main focus. It is known that the company has a huge vault of Disney, 20th Century, Hollywood Pictures, and Touchstone movies that have not been released on Blu-ray or remastered 4K yet.
With this new deal with Sony, Disney is ending the Disney Movie Club for good. Today (February 20), members were told in an email that "After 23 magical years, it's time to say goodbye." It was very hard, but we have decided to shut down the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the chance to serve loyal Disney fans like you!"
It also said, "In the coming months, we'll be giving you more perks to show how much we appreciate you being a loyal Member." Look for great deals that will help you finish adding movies you love to your collection. This will give you memories that you will always treasure.
Disney Movie Club was a membership program where Disney fans could buy real copies of their favorite movies and get special deals and items. The letter says that DMC members have until May 20, 2024, to place their orders. After that, on July 20, accounts will be closed, and the last day to return any titles will be September 20, 2018.
