Black Adam Fails To Change The Hierarchy of the DCEU, Will lose up to 100M
Another "Black Adam" story for the day. Despite being number one at the box office for three weeks in a row, the Dwayne Johnson-led DC superhero film may end up losing money.
You've probably heard enough about how "Black Adam" was supposed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Universe.
The film first opened in theaters in the United States on October 21, 2022, and it has since expanded globally, with releases in China in November and Japan just last Friday. Despite Johnson's star power, Variety reports that "Black Adam" has only grossed $387 million internationally so far.
This sounds good by pandemic standards, but "Black Adam" reportedly cost $195 to $200 million to make. The typical marketing budget for a superhero tentpole of this size is $100 million. However, Warner Bros. claims that it has reduced that figure to $80 million due to the ongoing challenge of attracting people to the multiplex while Covid remains a factor. Half of the ticket sales for "Black Adam" go back to theater owners, which means it would need to earn around $600 million to break even, according to some estimates. However, it appears that the film's theatrical gross will be in the $400 million range (implying that the studio will incur about half of the loss, or $100 million).
