Aquaman 2 Dies at the Box Office on Opening Weekend

Aquaman 2 Dies at the Box Office on Opening Weekend

Since the DC Extended Universe is no longer alive, we might as well bury Arthur Curry with honor. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is expected to have a $27.6 million opening weekend, which would be one of the worst starts for the franchise ever. it made more than Wonder Woman 1984 ($16.7 million), Blue Beetle ($25 million), and The Suicide Squad ($26.2 million), but two of those movies came out during the pandemic and don't really count. This is the second-worst first weekend for a DCEU movie in terms of how many people saw it.

There are a lot of signs that the Aquaman movie will only make $38 million to $39 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Good news, though: the DC Comics movie opened to $80 million around the world, bringing its total to $120 million around the world. That number unfortunately puts it in the same league as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, The Flash, and The Marvels.

Warner Bros. superhero sequel failed to make a splash in the marketplace with a $40M 4-day and $28.1M 3-day debut. Using the three-day figure for comparison, that’s:

  • -58% below December 2018’s original Aquaman = $67.8M

  • -39%% below November’s The Marvels = $46.1M

  • -49% below June’s The Flash = $55.0M

  • -58%% below 2022’s Black Adam = $67.0M

  • -6% below March’s Shazam!: Fury of the Gods = $30.1M

  • Only +12% above August’s Blue Beetle = $25.0M
